What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a popular procedure for fat reduction because it works and because it is non-invasive with minimal downtime. Years ago, scientists at Harvard University observed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks, this is called “Popsicle Panniculits.” The scientists—Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD—realized that the popsicles were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells. The idea that cold can target fat cells—without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue—was the insight behind Cryolipolysis®, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based. After many years of research and more than 60 published scientific and clinical journal papers and technical reports CoolSculpting for the body was introduced. The CoolSculpting applicator is similar to a large suction cup which literally sucks excess fat into the applicator. Fat cells that are frozen during the CoolSculpting procedure gradually die off and leave the body through the body’s natural elimination process. That’s why the results are long-term. The fat is gone for good and there is no damage to the skin! Untreated areas will have no change in fat cell distribution. Although men and women tend to show fat in different areas, the CoolSculpting procedure works for both men and women.
How do I know if I am a candidate for CoolScuplting?
The best thing to do is come in for a complimentary consultation with our certified providers and then we determine if you are a candidate and develop a treatment plan for you. The CoolSculpting procedure will NOT help you lose weight. However, if you want to lose unwanted fat and look slimmer in your clothes, then CoolSculpting may be right for you. It is intended for body contouring. The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure actually reduces the number of fat cells in treated areas by about 20% to 25% each time you do the procedure. These fat cells are naturally processed and eliminated, so they won’t migrate to another area of your body. And, unlike what happens with other procedures, there’s no change to fat cells in untreated areas. We do what is called Treatment to Transformation. This includes a minimum of two treatments in each area. That way you will eliminate your fat cells by 50% or more. If you can pinch it, we can most likely freeze it!
How long does the procedure take?
The initial consult is 30 minutes. Next we schedule a day that is convenient for you for your treatment. Each cycle takes 30-60 minutes. For example, if we are performing both the left and right side of your lower abdomen, it would take 60 minutes for each side. In that case, I would plan for 2.5hours. Sometimes patients are with us for 4+ hours, but this depends on the patient and treatment plan. Our CoolSculpting treatment room is very nice and quiet. We offer Wi-Fi and Cable TV to keep you relaxed and entertained. A lot of people catch up on work, phone calls or fall asleep.
What happens during the procedure?
Your certified clinician will mark the areas to be treated, photos will be taken for your record but not public use. Your face will not be in the photos we take for our CoolSculpting records. During your treatment, a gel pad and applicator will be applied to the targeted area. Though you may feel intense cold initially, this feeling usually subsides within 5 to 10 minutes as the area numbs. Because most applicators use a vacuum to draw fatty tissue into the applicator cup, you may also feel some pulling, tugging, and/or mild pinching. The CoolSculpting applicator then delivers controlled cooling to the targeted fat. During your procedure, feel free to read, check email, watch TV or even take a nap. After the treatment, your clinician will remove the device and massage the treated area for a 68% greater result!
What is the downtime of CoolSculpting and what does really feel like afterwards?
The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so which makes returning to normal activities afterwards a typically easy process. Often times, patients even return to work after their CoolSculpting treatment is over or go to the gym that night or the next day. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. Sensation of fullness in the back of the throat is normal after treating the chin area. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks. This is essentially your skin gradually “waking up” again from being frozen. Think about how your fingers or toes feel when they get cold and then when they begin to warm up or how they feel if you place them in warm water. That is a similar feeling with CoolSculpting. Though rare, some additional side effects may occur. As with any medical procedure, call your doctor to discuss pain control options.
How much fat is lost after a CoolSculpting Procedure?
Research shows 20-25% reduction of fat in treated areas. This is going to be *gradual over the next 8-12 weeks. Since we recommend Treatment to Transformation of two sessions, your second session would be done 30 days after your first CoolSculpting treatment. To get the best results we recommended keeping up with your diet and exercising routine. If you gain weight that would only reduce your progress.
CoolSculptin vs Lipo-suction?
Great question! Remember the basics of CoolSculpting; CoolSculpting is the most effective procedure for non-surgical fat reduction. It also works by contouring areas such as your hips, inner and outer thighs and abdomen. We recommend that you are 20-30 pounds of your ideal weight before you have CoolSculpting performed. Lipo-suction is a cosmetic surgery that breaks up and “sucks” fat from the body. During liposuction, small, thin, blunt-tipped tubes (cannula) are inserted through tiny cuts in the skin. Fat is is then sucked out through these tubes as the doctor moves the tubes around under the skin to target specific fat deposits. There are a lot of things to take into consideration.
What about pregnancy?
You are not to get CoolSculpting done while you are pregnant or breast feeding for at least a year. However, if you get pregnant after your treatment, it will not affect your pregnancy or delivery in any way.
How much does CoolSculpting Cost?
Treatment costs vary from person to person. But, we do have many in-house promotions that drastically reduce the price when multiple areas are done. Again, we encourage you to come in for a complementary consultation.
Why can’t I just apply a bag of ice to my stomach and get the same effect?
I get this question a lot. If you were to try this, it would hurt, A LOT, it’s not safe and you can cause nerve damage, frost-bite or worse. The CoolSculpting technology is able to transfer the cold down to the deepest layer of fat so you are getting substantial results while bypassing any damage that could occur to the skin or nerves, as you see with frost bite.
